Introduction :
Supporting staff assists nurses and doctors in delivering daily patient care, and directly responds to patients’ basic needs. An effective training program for supporting staff is required to provide them knowledge to look after patients as well as maintain a high quality of service. However, under the pandemic of COVID-19, solely “Face-to-Face” mode of training became unfeasible. Also, less responses were given by participants in the traditional way of training. Therefore, an interactive real-time training program was applied in three rehabilitation hospitals of Hong Kong East Cluster to continue our training for supporting staff.
Objectives :
- To facilitate supporting staff in different hospitals to attend the training program during the pandemic of COVID 19
- To improve skills and competence of supporting staff in taking care of patients
- To evaluate the training outcomes
Methodology :
Two electronic tools, named “Zoom”, and “Kahoot!”, were applied in the training program. “Zoom” connects all participants to the same virtual platform, allows a real time sharing of information, and facilitates communication. Therefore, supporting staff from Tung Wah Eastern Hospital (TWEH), Wong Chuk Hang Hospital (WCH), Cheshire Home, and Chung Hom Kok (CCH) can participate the training together. Moreover, “Kahoot”, an online educational apps, makes training more exciting and interactive. It requires participants to answer questions and motivates their engagement. So, supporting staff can learn the skills and knowledge in an interactive and interesting way. Also, after each training session, participants’ feedbacks are recorded automatically for further evaluation and analysis.
Result & Outcome :
From September 2022 to December 2022, three identical training sessions were held with very positive feedback. A total of 53 supporting staff participated in the training program. 54.7% (n=30) of participants strongly agreed and 45.3% (n=22) of participants agreed that the program was useful for them in handling their daily work. And all the participants felt satisfactory to the training program. Clinical preceptors, from Nursing Services Division, reviewed their competence and performance regularly after the training. Their feedback was positive.
An interactive real-time training program for supporting staff not only delivers training effectively to supporting staff in different geographic locations, but also enhances involvement from supporting staff.
