Introduction :
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), catheter leakage, blockage and accidental dislodgement are prevalent in urinary-catheterized patients. These complications are avoidable if patients’ self-care on foley is enhanced. Use of education video supported with a pamphlet as a new approach for educating patients foley care showed a significant decrease in CAUTI rate and length of stay. It minimize discrepancy of verbal education by different nurses, ensures consistency and standardization, and allows patients to review whenever necessary without time and geographical limit. Therefore, a pilot project of using patient education video on foley care in ward 8A has been carried out in 2022.
Objectives :
(1)To standardize patient education approach on foley care. (2)To enhance the effectiveness in educating catheterized patients of skills and knowledge about foley care. (3)To prevent unnecessary readmission and complications related to improper foley care. (4)To save nurses’ time in their daily heavy workload.
Methodology :
(1) Producing a new patient education video about foley care:
(1.1)Content of video included: Introduction and management of urinary catheter drainage system; Procedures of emptying and changing the drainage bag; CAUTI prevention.
(1.2) QR code for accessing to the video in YouTube was provided with the pamphlet.
(2) Implementation and evaluation:
(2.1)Patients in ward 8A who would be discharged with foley were recruited.
(2.2)Before discharge, patients had to: (i)Watch the video (ii)Return-demonstrate on emptying drainage bag (iii)Complete a post-test about foley care (iv)Receive the pamphlet and QR code.
(2.3) A telephone follow-up will be delivered one week after discharge to check for: (i)Signs of CAUTI (ii)Knowledge of foley care (iii)Satisfactory level of the video.
Result & Outcome :
30 patients were recruited from Jan to March 2022.
(1)Before discharge: All of them passed the return-demonstration of drainage bag emptying; and all of them passed the post-test.
(2)One week post-discharge phone follow-up: Neither readmission related to improper foley care nor CAUTI was reported; All patients answered correctly about the proper positioning of drainage bag, locations for catheter securement and situations that required medical service; All patients expressed the video was easy to understand, convenient to review, able to answer their doubts and they felts confident in caring their foley at home.
