Introduction :
The impact of aging nursing management workforce, especially nurse leaders with retired age poses a great concern to health care service in Bradbury Hospice (BBH), Cheshire Home, Shatin (SCH) and Shatin Hospital (SH) . The high attrition rate of experienced RNs and APNs with migration wave in the past 2 years also deepened the impact of nurse leader turnover. Succession planning and development of new nurse leaders to ensure smooth transition and stability in leadership to ensure patient safety and quality of patient care is a deliberate strategy and action.
Objectives :
1. Develop nursing managers to effective Nursing leaders , to equip the personal qualities of integrity, courage , initiative and the ability to handle stress , to apply creative leadership and keep nursing teams motivated at top quality .
2. Equip nursing supervisors with positive leadership skills to implement their supervisor role.
3. Empower nursing supervisors in handling staff with poor performances, staff conflicts in workplace.
4. Facilitate nursing supervisors their team members towards organization goals.
Methodology :
One day seminar workshop was organized for 30 APNs on 21 Oct ., 2022 – “ The Making of a New Supervisor in One Day”. An expert with more than 15 years in sales , marketing accounting and customer service with multinational companies in the Asia Pacific Region was invited as the trainer . Course contents include: (1) Guide nursing supervisors to anticipate, adapt and approach skills. (2) Provide knowledge on “To Be or not to Be” and (3) Facilitate nursing supervisors to make command, collaborate or coordinate in different case scenarios based on the topic of advanced person centered care and apply in real daily ward practice.
Two days seminar workshop was organized for 12 Ward Managers on 9 & 11 Nov., 2022. Concepts from Chinese philosopher and historical cases of Chinese emperors to help ward managers to equip their excellent personal qualities and lead nursing teams in real-life health care world. Ward managers are coached to redevelop their mindset, the need to lead themselves and their team members in delivering, sustaining high performance in health care service. Interactive lectures, simulations, role-plays, skill practices sessions are provided in the two days training.
Result & Outcome :
30 APNs and 12 ward managers in BBH/SCH/SH had attended the seminar workshops.
Average score in evaluation items are ranged from 5.25 to 5.42 over 6 .
Nursing supervisors had provided positive comments to the training. Comments including the training could help them to explore their mindset in building trust and to lead the nursing team in future . They had also learnt knowledge and skills in creative nursing management and leadership which could help their application in daily nursing team management to reduce nurse attrition rate and enhance patient care outcomes.
