Introduction :
With rapid evolution of surgical technology, theatre nurses face great challenges in keeping up to date information on device usage. While traditional teaching and learning mechanism in operating theatre are typically hand-to-hand, using convenience-oriented applications in education is explored and developed. QR codes are not new and have been used in many contexts to display information to users. With an initiative to enhance staff’s competency, ophthalmology team tries adopting QR codes in our clinical setting to facilitate efficiency in providing device information to colleagues and boost workplace assistance, colleagues can grasp more and raise awareness on using the device.
Objectives :
(1) Facilitate staff to obtain information of the devices in a faster and convenient way. (2) Arouse staff’s awareness of proper manipulation of the devices. (3) Enhance staff’s interest to explore information of the devices by scanning QR codes. (4) Enlighten staff’s development of self-learning practice.
Methodology :
(1) Devices were selected in phase to be included in this project. (2) Information of the selected devices were gathered and summarized from brochures or clinical guidelines, and then were presented in PowerPoint. Staff could access the information from google drive for reference. QR codes to the designated devices were then generated and attached to inventory tray tags. By scanning QR codes, staff could acquire information of the selected devices. (3) QR codes were introduced to colleagues. Evaluation with the aid of google forms was conducted to gather feedback and comments for improvement and to facilitate the implementation of the project substantially.
Result & Outcome :
(1) 91% of staff found the QR codes informative and user friendly, and 95% of staff commented the QR codes were relevant to their daily work, they could apply the knowledge gained to facilitate their daily work. QR codes were appended in the eye store index book responding to colleagues’ feedback. (2) 96% of staff agreed that their knowledge and skills of the device manipulation were enhanced, and their awareness of proper device manipulation were raised. (3) 93% of staff agreed the QR codes enhanced their interest to explore information by scanning QR codes and enlightened their self-learning. (4) Orthopaedics and urology teams were inspired to initiate projects with the use of convenience-oriented applications.
