Introduction :
Student nurses from different educational institution and of different clinical years are assigned to clinical setting for enriching their clinical experience each year. It is crucial to design the guidance system in ward to facilitate their communication with mentors and build up a learning environment for their fruitful clinical placement.
Objectives :
To ensure students to have standard mentorship with designated mentor by means of
ward teaching tools and video aids.
Methodology :
The mentorship team of one APN leader and 7 trained ward nurses are formed for the guidance of student nurses from 7 educational institutions.
Orientation: Every student nurse will have the orientation program on the first day of their placement by the designated mentor. Video of Radioactive Isolation & Chemotherapy case is introduced as these cases are not allocated for student nurses for clinical safety.
Mode of mentorship:
1) Placement schedule: Mentor will communicate with student nurse on their duty pattern together with the practical exam schedule before duty planning.
2) Student Assignment: specific assignment board for student to allocate a specific group of patient care with mentor guidance
3) Audits: Mentor will perform clinical audits for student nurse on Nasogastric tube feeding & blood glucose monitoring.
4) Guidance: Mentor will guide student nurse on clinical nursing care by mean of “Information file for nurse trainees” in the teaching corner.
Documentation: Clinical Oncology nursing care and coaching Record will be recorded by mentor by the end of the placement.
Result & Outcome :
47 students have their clinical placement from 2019 to 2021. All of them show that the well- established guidance system enriched their learning in Clinical Oncology nursing. The “Information file for nurse trainees” and video aids in teaching corner is easily accessible and informative. The designated mentor gives them an easily communication channel between ward & institution.
