Introduction :
Nursing staff have a very heavy workload every day, besides the clinical workload, nurses also need to take care a lot of administrative issue such as bed management, patient admission and discharge procedures, and also the statistics and reporting on the nursing activities.
These statistics and reporting works included the calculation of admission and discharge headcount, number of critical patients, number of restraint patients and number of home leave patient etc.
In the old days, all these data are counted by manual calculation by nurses on paper/booklet form shift to shift. This is a very difficult task especially during the night shift and the manual data collected is difficult for report generation and further management.
Objectives :
1. By introducing the EDNRS, to increase the accuracy of the data collected through auto calculation.
2. To minimize workload and impact to the nursing staff.
3. To provide an environmental friendly platform and paperless documentation.
4. To facilitate the use of data to improve nursing quality and safety.
Methodology :
Introduce the idea, develop the system logistics, collect user comment, provide training and launch the EDNRS to record the daily nursing activities and statistics. The electronic data is able to enhance the data accuracy and avoid transcription. When the ward nursing staff login into the system, he/she could enter, amend or review the record of nursing activities and statistics in a timely manner. Moreover, the Nursing Supervisors and Nursing Services Division (NSD) could monitor and retrieve the data for research and sharing purpose without any document handling and information transcription, an environmental friendly working environment could be achieved.
Result & Outcome :
With the collaboration of the Information and Technology Department, the first system based nursing report system in the Hospital Authority was implemented on 28 March 2021, after 3 months of roll out, and evaluation was conducted, over 50 responses were received, 100% of the responses expressed the system could improve the accuracy of the data, and easy to retrieve the required information. Nearly 80% of respondents expressed the system is easy to learn and use. Continuous training and system enhancement is still move on to excel the system and made it a good friend to our nurses.
