Introduction :
Deficits in executive function (EF) are commonly resulted from acquired brain injury (ABI). Goal management training (GMT) is a theory-driven and manualized training specially designed for adults with executive dysfunction. Previous reviews on effectiveness of GMT included low-quality trials and were not updated.
Objectives :
This study aims to review the current evidence of effectiveness of GMT in adults with ABI.
Methodology :
Studies evaluating effectiveness of GMT were searched in MEDLINE, PubMed and Embase. Only randomized control trials published in English from 2000 to 2020 were included. Study qualities were appraised by the Cochrane Collaboration’s tool for assessing risk of bias.
Result & Outcome :
Results:
Eight studies with 296 participants were identified. Evidence supported effectiveness on functional task performance, daily function, emotional regulation, and goal attainment, despite uncertain effect on neuropsychological tests of EF. Different GMT versions were examined, but evidence on the most effective version was inconclusive.
Conclusions:
Current evidence revealed effectiveness of GMT on various aspects in adults with ABI. Further studies are required to determine the most effective GMT scheme.
