Introduction :
Hand hygiene is the most effective way to prevent the spreading of pathogens and infections in hospital. Therefore, it is crucial to engage infection control link person (ICLP) to upkeep hand hygiene compliance. Traditionally, observed data was collected by using hand hygiene observation paper form, which induced concerns such as timely submission and storage of data. In such connection, modernization of hand hygiene compliance monitoring is commenced from May 2021 to improve access and efficiency of hand hygiene audit.
Objectives :
1.To streamline the data submission process of hand hygiene audit 2.To create environmental friendly workflow using electronic form 3.To enhance efficiency of data interpretation
Methodology :
ICLP and ICNs started the discussion to improve the workflow of hand hygiene monitoring. Members agreed to use electronic form for audit. Then, the e-form was built and tested by three ICLP. Feedback was collected from Jun to Jul 2021. E-form format was modified and was fully implemented in Sep 2021. Further, to facilitate the hand hygiene observation using electronic devices, E-form link was added to infection control website and shortcut was placed to iPad at units for easy access.
Result & Outcome :
Feedback was very positive from ICLP and ICNs. Up to the end of Dec 2021, 302 forms were submitted using e-form including 2855 hand hygiene observation. ICLP appreciate the change from paper form to paperless which can facilitate hand hygiene audit efficiently.
From administrative perspective, the demand of portering service was dramatically reduced because of the form submission electronically. Moreover, the modernization of workflow helps to save at least 4 hours per month for data transcription. Graphs, including hand hygiene compliance rate by staff categories and by ward, could also be generated automatically via E-form system.
To conclude, making good use of technology such as e-forms could streamline the workflow, improve productivity and facilitate communication and collaboration among units.
