Introduction :
Staff occupational safety and health is always the top priority. With the updated infection control measures in response to the Covid-19 situation, Kowloon West Cluster General Out-patient Clinics (KWC GOPC) updated resuscitation guideline. Subsequently, the new Petermann Mattress was equipped in all KWC GOPC for lifting and transferring collapsed/ injured patient to negative pressure room for resuscitation.
Objectives :
1. To develop a training package to enhance safety and proper handling during lifting and transferring patient in GOPC 2. To promote staff occupational safety and health with updated knowledge and skills of Manual Handling Operation 3. To equip staff with clinic-based practice and hands-on training to use the new Petermann mattress
Methodology :
1. To formulate a multidisciplinary focus group that included key members with occupational therapists, physiotherapists and FM OSH coordinators 2. To develop a package of training materials, checklist and resources file for the use of the new Petermann Mattress 3. To provide series of training included hands-on and on-site training for frontline staff, train-the-trainer session and sharing forum 4. To check the compliance with the checklist of using the new transfer mattress and review the corresponding improvement work
Result & Outcome :
1. For training: Twelve on-site training sessions were conducted in 11 GOPC clinics. The key trainers were two occupational therapists and four physiotherapists. There were altogether 171 staff attended the hands-on training. 51 OSH link officers and coordinators attended the related sharing session in the OSH Link Officer Development Day 2021.
2. A new checklist was designed with 22 items covered four scopes: environmental consideration, use of the tool, manual handling operation and clinic operational issue. The compliance review was conducted in 11 KWC GOPC clinics. All (100%) checklist items were satisfactorily complied during the on-site assessment. There were 25 recommendation points for improvement during the site visit and all were addressed / corrected accordingly.
3. There were annual resuscitation drills conducted in 13 KWC GOPC. The use of new Petermann Mattress was smoothly incorporated with the updated resuscitation guideline. No staff was reported injury during the lifting and transferring procedure in the drills.
