Introduction :
An engaged workforce is a key to providing high-quality patient care. Besides, improving staff engagement resulted in employees staying longer at the hospital. Institute for Healthcare Improvement(IHI) has established a framework for Improving Joy in Work in 2017. The framework has four steps for leaders to work on and nine critical components for ensuring a joyful, engaged workforce.
Objectives :
This project aims to apply "Joy in Work" at the Dietetics Department of Shatin Hospital to enhance the staff engagement level.
Methodology :
All six SH Dietetics staff were asked the question "What's matter to you" during an annual staff performance review interview. Their answers were categorized into either "internal" or "clinical" aspects. 1) What's matter to you (internal) • Internal communication • Positive behaviour at workplace • Trust among department • Joyful workplace • Task aligns with hospital directions • Staff engagement • Personal growth 2) What's matter to you (clinical) • Patient satisfaction • Service/ treatment efficiency and effectiveness (outcomes) • Service quality • Value of our service Measures including how to improve internal communication and trust among the department, and methods on how to obtain a positive and joyful workplace were introduced. Besides, two patient satisfaction surveys and three patient nutrition outcomes evaluations were completed to provide quality outcomes feedback to our staff.
Result & Outcome :
Total 6 post-test questionnaires were received. More than 100% of responses were ranked satisfied or highly satisfied on the 1) clear working direction, 2) better internal communication, 3)Improved teamwork, 4) Improved happiness level.
