Introduction :
At the end of January 2020, Hong Kong emerged as an epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the experience of handling patients with SARS, the Respiratory team doctors and nurses formed a roadshow team to deliver practical tips for safe CPR to minimize the risk of staff infection as CPR is an aerosol-generating procedure.
Objectives :
Reduce the risk of staff infection by minimizing aerosol generation and maximizing first pass success during CPR by
1.Emphasize and reinforcement of the appropriate infectious control measures
2.Enhance knowledge of CPR by live demonstration
3.Introduce the use of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) which is newly available in the department
4.Question and Answer (Q & A) session to address staff concerns
Methodology :
The roadshow team go to each medical wards at least twice during the roadshow week, nurses and doctors in the wards are encouraged to join without need of prior registration.
Information about appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) usage and importance of infectious control measures during COVID-19 era were delivered. After that, there were live demonstration of airway management, bag-valve-mask (BVM) bagging and intubation using video-laryngoscope with manikin. LMA was introduced as an alternative to endotracheal intubation because it is easy to use and quick to place.
Final Q & A session will address staff’s questions and concerns, reinforcing the understanding of the information passed.
Post roadshow questionnaire consisting 5 yes - no questions to evaluate the usefulness of the roadshow.
Result & Outcome :
In the five working days from 18th to 24th February 2020, roadshow team preformed 40 roadshows in 21 medical wards. All were well attended by over 315 staffs. Feedback at the end of roadshow was overwhelmingly positive, participants expressed less anxiety with more confidence in performing safe CPR during COVID-19.
Total 105 questionnaires were returned, 95% agreed that the roadshow enhance their understanding of the possible transition route of COVID-19, enhance their knowledge of usage of appropriate PPE, reinforce their technique to perform BVM bagging and aware the availability and usage of LMA. Overall 95% agreed that the roadshow was helpful in their daily clinical practice.
Conclusion
Roadshow is effective in reinforcing safe CPR during COVID-19.
