Introduction :
While the number of newly joined staff is rising, and that various nursing practices are observed, it should be emphasized that standardizing nursing care and strengthening nurses on their state-of-the-art practice are important to avoid preventable harm to our patients. Guidelines can act as a tool for implementing health care practices. Nurses are encouraged to follow clinical guidelines for ensuring the consistency of nursing practice, and providing the most effective and safest caring service to the patients.
Objectives :
1.To cultivate a culture in self-learning and enforce stronger discipline in clinical practices
2.To promote consistency of nursing practice and deepen nurses’ understanding of clinical guideline
Methodology :
To motivate nurses to actively participate in reading clinical guidelines, an online quiz with prizes was held for all the nursing staff of the department, including 8 wards and 1 SOPD by voluntary participation from June to August 2021. Before the activity started, staff opinions related to current practices and problem faced in reading clinical guideline were collected. For the online quiz, three topics regarding clinical guidelines were chosen and each topic had 10 questions in the quiz. Multiple choice questions, single answer questions and situational-based questions were used, and the source of getting the relevant guidelines was also provided in the quiz. The quiz was run on a monthly basis, one topic a month. Participants with full marks automatically entered the computerised lucky draw.
Result & Outcome :
The overall participation rate of the online quiz was 36%, and in average 29% of the participants got full marks. A self-rating 5-point Likert scale satisfaction survey was conducted after all the quizzes were completed. The response rate of the survey was 39%, of which 92% agreed they became familiar with retrieving and reading the clinical guidelines online, 96% of participants agreed the quiz could help them to review their current practice. Moreover, 87% agreed the quiz could help them to develop a habit to read the clinical guidelines regularly and 94% agreed the experience of this online quiz activity was satisfactory. In conclusion, it was a good attempt in establishing a new learning platform and engaging nursing staff to develop a routine of reading clinical guidelines. Valuable feedback obtained from the survey not only provided information about the problems faced in reading guidelines, but also helped from strategies of disseminating clinical guidelines and the recommendation of the next topics. Future compulsory exercises may be considered to get more favourable outcomes, and a sustainable self-learning model may be built.
