Introduction :
Chalets in Cheshire Home Shatin is a home-setting environment for disabled residents. Residents live in Chalets with kitchen, toilet, living room and bedroom and take care of themselves with minimal assistance from staff previously. Time flies, all of them have lived in Chalets for more than 10 years. Most of them are now experiencing aging process and the level of dependency is gradually increasing. Six patient injuries related to household safety and four fall incidents were reported in 2020. Each incident resulted in different negative impact on resident’s health. Besides, Covid-19 pandemic is also a matter of concern on the infectious risk of these residents. Hence, a taskforce was established to enhance safety of Chalet residents.
Objectives :
1. To provide education on fall prevention, infection control measures especially for COVID-19 prevention and personal safety
2. To increase residents' awareness on household safety
3. To minimize fall and injury risk of residents
Methodology :
An education series for all Chalets residents was held in 2021. The main theme of it was “Be Safe in Year of the Ox” and it included four topics which were fall prevention, infection control issues especially related to COVID-19, household safety tips and personal care. For each topic, three identical sessions in a month were held in the Chalets Dayroom from February 2021 to July 2021. Each session was limited in 60 minutes. Talk, video and small games were adopted in the session. Maximum six residents participated in the session to ensure sufficient social distancing. Moreover, general infection control measures such as taking body temperature, mask and had hygiene were implemented.
Result & Outcome :
All residents in Chalets (total 18) attended the four talks. A questionnaire which contained five 5-point Likert Scale questions was designed for evaluation after each sessions of the series. In general, all residents agreed the education series helped them to understand the cause of incidents and increased their awareness of safety. They found the series was useful in daily living. Also, they all expressed that the content and length of the talk were appropriate. The average resident satisfaction score on education series was 5 out of 5. Apart from the survey, there was no incidents related to fall and household safety reported after the education series in 2021.
The result showed that our residents are beneficial from the education series. Educational activity is recommended to keep our residents updated health concept in order to prevent incidents and promote healthy lifestyle.
