Introduction :
Development of smart hospital is the one of the main directions in Hospital Authority. KEC is one of the initiator of the promulgation of smart project. Induction of Robot can help to relieve the workload of colleagues and reserve manpower to focus in clinical service. Our new teammate, Robot Gele joined Day Surgery Centre (DSC) of UCH since early 2020. She helps nurses by performing non-critical tasks such as providing mobile information and interactive services for patient education, entertainment, and accompanying pediatric patients to operating room who is undergo operation. The induction of Robot Gele improves the quality of service and promotes patient safety.
Objectives :
(1) To orientate patients and their carers on the patient journey in DSC. (2) To empower patient's knowledge and elevate self-confidence and understanding of their operation. (3) To alleviate patients’ and carers’ anxiety level and gain cooperation in their care.
Methodology :
A taskforce of induction Robot Gele was formed in June 2019. All nursing staff engaged in discussion and preparation for the issues frequently asked by patients in daily operation. Firstly, there is about 200 Q&A (visual & auditory) of various specialties (e.g. Anesthesia, Dental, ENT, Eye, Gynecology, General Surgery, Orthopedic etc.) are installed and displayed, which facilitates an interactive patient education. Secondly, Robot Gele provides 23 computer games installed in built-in I Pad. Lastly, video of patient journey and other general issues are installed as well. All patients undergo elective operation in DSC and patients who attend pre-operative anaesthetic assessment can assess Robot Gele in the unit.
Result & Outcome :
From October to November 2020, satisfaction survey conducted. 100% patients satisfied with the service of Robot Gele, 90% patients increased their confidence and 80% decreased their anxiety level. 80% staffs agreed Robot assisted patients to gain cooperation and 60% staffs agreed Robot helps to decrease their workload. Patients paid high compliment on Robot Gele in deed. Paediatric patient was satisfied by the robot appearance, enjoy the video provision on patient journey and the funny I pad games. Besides, patients and carers’ stated that Robot Gele was innovative and informative. Elderly patients appraised that Robot Gele provided visualize and auditory explanation which was convenience and time saving. In conclusion, with the assistance of the Robot Gele, the workload can be shared and staff can focus more time in patient care and quality of service is enhanced.
