Introduction :
The ERAS program has been implemented since 2017 in collaboration with multidisciplinary disciplines in UCH. The ERAS team members include Colorectal surgeons, anesthetists, a specialty nurse, physiotherapists, dietitians, social workers, and ward nurses to provide high quality, effective and efficient services for colorectal surgical patients in UCH. All elective colorectal cancer patients and patients require stoma closure were recruited in ERAS program. The team provided optimal and good quality care through an evidence –based approach.
The success of the ERAS program very much depends on the compliancy of fulfilling the well-developed protocol and nurses play an important role on it.
Other than nurses provide continuity of holistic care for the patients after surgery, the ERAS specialty nurse is one of the essential members to coordinate, collaborate and communicate with the team and the patients, particularly providing psychological support.

To increase compliance with the ERAS protocol
To empower patients and care givers to cope with the disease
To explore the patient’s psychosocial aspect
To promote fast recovery after major surgery
Methodology :
Audit
DASS21
Patient’s satisfaction questionnaire
Result & Outcome :
1.This is a retrospective review of patients undergoing colorectal surgery in UCH. From 2017 to 2020, patient length of stay, post-operative complications and patient’s psychosocial states are the key parameters to examine the effectiveness of ERAS program.
2.The median post-operative length of stay of the target group patients undergone colonic surgery in UCH decreased from 11 days to 9 days.
3.Post op anastomotic leakage rate decreased by 2.5%.
4.Overall HA patients post op blood transfusion within 72 hours of surgery decreased after iron management.
5.Compliance rate of early resume diet and removal of urinary catheters was increased.
6.For severe to extremely severe level on depression or anxiety patients, who were early identified and referred to clinical psychologist, medical social worker, or hospital Chaplaincy for further management since 2020.
7. All of ERAS patients were recruited and they showed satisfactory in the ERAS program.
With the concerted effort of multi-disciplinary team members, the goal of enhancing patient recovery and less complications after colorectal surgery were achieved.
Nurses play an important role on the continuum of holistic care for the patients before and after surgery and facilitating them to regain a healthy life.
