Introduction :
People with Severe Mental Illness (SMI) have a higher mortality rate than the general population due to their high-risk sedentary lifestyle behavior. Tremendous evidence supported the positive benefits of participating in physical activity on individual’s health. However, lack of motivation and limited confidence in their ability to exercise were the major barriers to facilitate their engagement. FloorCurling was an inclusive sport which is more creative in nature, provide sense of control and foster better adherence to physical activity for clients with SMI.
Objectives :
(1)Equip skill and enhance motivation of clients with mental illness to participate in Sport; and (2)Evaluate the effectiveness of the FloorCurling to reduce (a)psychiatric symptoms and (b)any positive influence on well-being.
Methodology :
From July to October 2021, a total of 21 adult psychiatric day-patients suffering from schizophrenia were recruited. 13 participants were successfully completed a 12-session of FloorCurling training program and the competition.
Result & Outcome :
In the mental condition aspect, there was a significant reduction in the negative score of the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS-6) in “Blunted Affect” subscale (p<0.02); “Social Withdrawal” subscale (p<0.01) & “Lack of Spontaneity and flow of conversation” subscale (p<0.002). In the well-being aspect, there was significant improvement in the Chinese general self-efficacy scale in Q9 “If I am in trouble, I can usually think of a solution” (p<.009) & Q10 “I can usually handle whatever comes my way” (p<.03). In the volition aspect, there was positive changes in all the level of the Volitional Questionnaire such as “Exploration” (p<0.001); “Competency” (p<0.001) & “Achievement” (p<0.001).
