Introduction :
Patient hoist is a very common medical device to assist patient mobilization in daily nursing care. Recent incident review indicated that the improper use of patient hoists can cause severe patient injuries, such as fracture. So getting trained on safe hoist operation is crucial for nurses and care-related supporting staff. However, unprecedented challenges from the impact of Covid-19 and the policy on social distance, face‑to‑face teaching and learning activities were replaced by e-learning on digital platforms. As a result, on-line training materials for safe hoist operation were developed targeting health care workers with satisfied outcomes.
Objectives :
● To equip nurse and care-related supporting staff’s knowledge and skills on safe hoist operation through on-line training materials; ● To review the training outcomes through on-line Quiz and on-site skill assessment
Methodology :
To develop tailor-made patient hoist on-line training for nurses and care-related supporting staff, we summed up the procedures and practical tips in a 30-minute video. It illustrated the safety operation of mobile and ceiling hoists. Recent incidents related to hoist operations and the lessons learnt were also included into the contents. Health care workers were required to complete an on-line quiz and training evaluation after viewing the on-line training. Target colleagues could access the on-line training materials on their own space, anytime and anywhere. Designated nurses conducted skill assessment individually to make sure all supporting staff are familiar with the hoist system before lifting patients.
Result & Outcome :
● Total 98 nurses and 64 supporting staff have attended the on-line training. ● 46 supporting staff have conducted skill assessments with all passed. ● Around 99% of staff were satisfied with the training materials. ● Incidents related to the operation of hoist remained zero. Patient Hoist On-line Training materials gave nurses and care-related supporting staff a good, comprehensive learning opportunity to equip their knowledge and skill on safe hoist operation with desirable outcomes.
