Introduction :
The global spread of COVID-19 highlights the importance of frontline healthcare providers in pandemic response. Without the previous experience in taking care of COVID-19 patients, Haven of Hope Hospital had faced a great challenge to convert into a designated hospital within a short time during the fifth wave of pandemic. Learning the lessons, a series of measures had been introduced to prepare for the potential surges of COVID-19 and to cultivate the workforce to care for isolation patients.
Objectives :
1. To provide the latest information on COVID-19 effectively 2. To equip nursing staff with the necessary knowledge and skills in caring COVID-19 patients 3. To get familiar with the isolation settings and workflow for deployed nurses and supporting staff before deployment 4. To mitigate the infection risk to rescuers during resuscitation of COVID-19 patients
Methodology :
A website was built for dual purpose: (1) to serve as a platform for department leadership to display information on the latest workflow and policies, and (2) to deliver training. Both corporate and internal information of COVID-19 was aggregated and displayed in the website. The content was continually reviewed to ensure alignment with the updated guidance from corporate level. Adopting the concept of blended learning model, training videos were created and shared on the website. The videos covered 4 major areas, including ward tour, PPE proficiency training, special considerations of patient care in isolation settings, and special considerations of resuscitation of COVID-19 patients. Before deployment, staff were required to go through all these videos and participated in the on-site orientation and simulation-based training on resuscitation and inter-hospital transfer.
Result & Outcome :
The website served effectively as a platform for nursing staff to access the latest information of COVID-19. Most nursing staff found the online format of training useful and convenient, which helped to improve their knowledge of COVID-19, self-protection awareness, and competency in taking care of COVID-19 patients. The feedback survey from staff who participated in the on-site orientation and simulation-based training suggested that over 90% participants agreed that they were familiar with the workflow and confident in managing critically ill COVID-19 patients.
