Introduction :
KEC has adopted SMART Hospital policy to address healthcare needs through employing digital technologies. The policy emphasizes on aspects including smart logistics, intelligent workplace and modernized healthcare. In March 2021, the first oncology ward in United Christian Hospital (UCH), 3BON ward, was newly opened. As a new ward, we would like to be a role model and pioneer of SMART hospital, we implemented Smart systems to facilitate daily ward routine.
Objectives :
Through adopting Smart Systems, we aim to enhance quality and safety through proper documentation, to increase working efficiency through better staff communication, and to raise patient experience through technology advancement.
Methodology :
We have adopted different Smart Systems to achieve SMART hospital. Electronic Vital Signs, Smart Panel, Chemo Module, Nursing Care Organizer, and Command Centre were invited by HOIT and UCH Nursing Service Division to pilot in 3BON. Intranet Update, Clinical Dashboard, Video Call Service were adopted for daily clinical use. Oncology nurses formed an IT team to facilitate the adaptation of these systems in 3BON. All systems are established with the cycle of “Plan-Do-Check-Act” by our IT team. Our IT team also provide staff training, supervision and support, evaluation and feedbacks.
Result & Outcome :
All Smart Systems have been functioning since the opening of ward. All (100%) oncology nurses and patient-care assistants (PCA) passed return demonstration and audit. Online questionnaire evaluation was conducted, 90% of healthcare providers were satisfied with Smart Systems. PCAs reported that the systems were time-saving, convenient, clear and easy to use, thus enhancing working efficiency. Nurses described that the systems ensured accurate documentation. The documentation of Electronic Vital Signs and Chemo Module were paperless and stored in CMS, allowing healthcare providers to retrieve patients’ past and present data with just a click in anywhere, enhancing quality and safety of healthcare system. Nurses also reviewed the Clinical Dashboard and Intranet update enhanced staff communication. Physicians expressed that the remote reviewing of electronic data facilitated rapid clinical decision making. Patients satisfied with Video Call service and claimed better communication with relatives during hospitalization. In conclusion, all ward staff believed that Smart Systems facilitated our clinical work, and we are welcomed to start new SMART projects in the upcoming future.
