Introduction :
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is a process used to review, analyze, and translate the latest scientific evidence into clinical practices. Integrating EBP into nursing practice improves quality of patient care and outcomes. Due to insufficient local guidelines of nursing care on lactational breast abscess in breast care nursing, EBP group was set up among Surgical Advisory Group (Breast Care) members, chaired by Nurse Consultants (NCs) of Hospital Authority (HA) hospitals. Multidisciplinary expertise among HA clusters were invited to deliver lectures and participate in journal sharing sessions. EBP information would be applied in daily nursing guidelines and practice.
Objectives :
To consolidate EBP information in clinical practice of breast care nursing on lactational breast abscess.
Methodology :
3 meetings by zoom platform including lectures delivered by expertise and journal review sessions chaired by NCs were organized in September, October and December 2022. Midwifery consultant(MC), traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner and Pharmacist were invited to deliver lectures. 4 clinical questions including breast massage, compress applications, breastfeeding maintenance and wound care were reviewed. Young generation breast care nurses (BCNs) participated in small groups led by NCs in journal reviews and clinical nursing guidelines consolidation. The journals were evaluated by using John Hopkins’ EBP model. MCs and NCs in other specialties were invited to provide comments in journal review sessions. To evaluate satisfaction of participating nurses; a self-administered questionnaire was designed with a five-point Likert scale.
Result & Outcome :
Results:
49, 31 and 20 participants in 3 sessions respectively, all showed positive feedback on innovative review methods. 100% participants acknowledged that EBP sessions updated their knowledge; stimulated their interests on EBP concepts; willing to change their clinical practice; and agreed to participate in future EBP sessions. Consensus on 4 clinical questions was achieved including gentle breast massage instead of vigorous massage, hot compress before breastfeeding and cold compress afterwards; breastfeeding could be maintained if appropriate treatment and care were applied, principle of wound care with maintenance of breastfeeding should be applied to breast abscess care.
Conclusion:
Meetings including lectures and EBP journal reviews were regarded as an innovative method of formulating clinical nursing guidelines; supplemented by opinion of multi-disciplinary expertise among clusters of HA. EBP concepts have been promoted among young generation BCNs by including their active participation; and sustainable development will be maintained by organizing regular EBP sessions.
