Objectives :
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is an evidence-based perioperative protocol that aims to improve surgical outcomes. Implementation of ERAS program in surgery can lead to significantly reduction in complication rate and length of hospital stay (LOS). Nutrition support is crucial to optimize the nutrition status on this patient population. This was a prospective study from April 2021 to March 2022 to examine service coverage and selected nutrition specific outcomes on ERAS program on patients undergoing lower gastrointestinal surgeries.
Methodology :
Patients recruitment included all Kowloon East Cluster Dietetic Departments on cancer of colon and cancer of rectum. Patients' demographics were analyzed and paired-t-test was used to examine the variance of pre- and post-ERAS program nutrition-specific parameters.
Result & Outcome :
A total number of 275 patients were recruited and produced 1500 attendance with treatment intensity of 4 (ranges from 2-7). The mean number of visits per patients were 5. There were 128 patients with complete sets of pre- and post-assessment data. Both energy intake and protein intake were significantly increased from 1000kcal/day and 46gprotein/day to 1400kcal/day and 60gprotein/day (p<0.001). Patient met >85% of both their energy and protein requirements. Weight loss was insignificant in this cohort.
