Introduction :
The Orientation and Induction (O&I) Programme for New Residents is a formal education programme designed to equip new residents with practical skills in areas such as transport of critically-ill patients, resuscitation, surgical and procedural safety, communication skills and incident management. Simulation training allows staff to learn procedures and techniques in a safe and controlled environment and is particularly useful for handling emergencies, high-stress situations, and complex procedures. Cinematic Virtual Reality (VR) allows staff to be fully-immersive in a communication environment and is known to stimulate active listening and empathy.
Objectives :
1. To improve engagement of learners through the use of simulation training and introduction of cinematic VR in O&I Programme for new residents. 2. To obtain critical feedback on the implementation for further use of these techniques in other training programmes
Methodology :
A taskforce was set up to revamp the KWC O&I Programme for new residents. Simulation training was introduced for sessions on surgical and procedural safety, resuscitation, and transport of critically-ill patients. Cinematic VR technologies was used to record and deliver videos for clinical communication skills. Participants are requested to bring their own device for use with cardboard-based VR goggles, and access was provided through 5G network. The revamped KWC O&I Programme was held on both 26 and 27 July 2022 for newly recruited residents in KWC. Subsequently, participants are invited to provide voluntary feedback via a survey questionnaire, and to join a focus group in August 2022 to provide evaluation of the new programme.
Result & Outcome :
97% of newly recruited residents participated in the programme in 2022. Positive feedback was received from the majority of participants. More than 93% of respondents agreed that the use of simulation training and cinematic VR technologies are more interesting, practical, and inspiring than traditional lectures. 12 new residents were invited to join a focus group in August 2022. They indicated that they enjoyed the interactive training models and agreed that the training was practical and useful, with the design of the scenarios being similar to the actual ward environment. Situation awareness and understanding of non-verbal signals in communication were two of the major benefits obtained in the revamped sessions.
