Receiving a complaint or claim is incredibly difficult for any medical practitioner. When such incidents occur, Medical Protection could provide expert advice and support. Medical Protection provides support with both claims and non-claims matters. This talk will focus on the non-claims matters that we assist with. These include:
Regulatory
Disciplinary (arising from concerns around clinical capability)
Inquests
Police investigations
Media issues
The session will advise on how to reduce the risks of being involved in these case types, how we assist members involved in these case types and steps that doctors can take to reduce their risk should they become subject of an investigation. The session will draw on some overseas case examples to demonstrate the practical reality of these case types.
Areas of risk reduction that we will explore include, along with other areas, look at good record keeping, consent and use of chaperones. By being aware of potential risks and taking steps to mitigate these before an incident occurs, this will demonstrate how MPS to protect member from future complaints and claims.
