Genetics and Genomic Services in the English National Health Service

Speaker 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM (Asia/Hong_Kong) 2023/05/16 07:00:00 UTC - 2023/05/16 08:00:00 UTC
In England in 2018 genetic laboratory services were reconfigured into seven Genomic Laboratory Hubs in order to deliver a state of the art genomic laboratory service that will harness  advances in genomic technologies and the ability to use next generation sequencing and other new and emerging powerful genomic technologies with delivery at scale, with value for money and an improvement in patient outcomes. In this presentation I will describe the progress made, new services delivered, impact and future plans.

Creating Paradigm Shifts in Genomic Medicine: Perspectives from a Hong Kong-based Clinician-scientist

Speaker 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM (Asia/Hong_Kong) 2023/05/16 07:00:00 UTC - 2023/05/16 08:00:00 UTC
My group first reported the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma in 1997. Since then, we have elucidated the basic biological parameters governing this phenomenon. We have also translated this discovery into a platform for non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) that is used globally. We have also applied a similar principle to develop blood-based DNA tests for detecting cancer. This work has led to the commercialisation of the first multi-cancer, early detection (MCED) test. I shall share some of my experiences from this journey during this lecture.
